Hi All!
Just received my copy and see some interesting reading ahead... If you are a PSA member I'd love to know which essay is grabbing you and why. I am looking forward to David Roche's "The Unhealthy in 'The Fall of the House of Usher': Poe's Aesthetics of Contamination"... More to come!
Sherston’s Progress: The Memoirs of George Sherston

I was most excited to see the short but important response to Jill Lepore's New Yorker article in the intro. Frankly, more Poeists should step forward and cut down her slanted viewpoint.
ReplyDeleteI think I agree with you Rob. While as a non-Poe scholar (presumably) Lepore did a nice job researching context and crafting an article to echo the present economic climate, she is rather reductive of Poe as a person and as a writer. It would have been a more well rounded piece if she didn't turn him into a caricature, like so many seem tempted to do.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree about the ending. I had a visceral reaction to her using of Lowell's poem excerpt to be cute. Pandering to her readership a bit, no?
